Better Printing with Thin Clients and Zero Clients

In this white paper, you will discover how ThinPrint optimizes thin client printing in all IT environments. The solution ensures maximum flexibility when choosing both the hardware and design of the printing environment.

White Paper Abstract

Thin and zero clients are an excellent choice in many application cases and particularly in virtual or remote desktop environments. Thin and zero clients are, compared to PCs inexpensive, long-lasting, low-maintenance and easy to manage centrally. In cases of malfunctions, the hardware can be replaced easily and without additional configuration.

In addition to those advantages that companies gain by using thin and zero clients, there are also shortcomings. Thus, printing with thin and zero clients in serverbased computing environments and architectures with virtual and remote desktops is often extraordinarily difficult.

The Challenges of Printing with Thin and Zero Clients

Thin/zero-client printing is already problematic due to the printer drivers because these can only be installed on very few thin clients and no zero clients. As a result, when companies use thin clients, they have to rely either on native printer drivers on the Remote Desktop Session Hosts (RDSH = terminal server) and virtual desktops or on network printing.

But this causes additional problems for companies. Managing printer drivers on terminal servers and virtual desktops is time-consuming and undesirable. There is also the threat of trouble with incompatible printer drivers. Additionally network printing uses TCP/IP as the transmission protocol, which entails additional difficulties.

But that’s not all. Print jobs often reach gigantic proportions and, if a print server is used, must be sent from virtual or remote desktops to the print server and from there to the printer. Such complicated printing paths and congested lines impair both printing and session performance and negatively impact user acceptance as a result.

ThinPrint: Optimized Thin-Client Printing in All Environments

In this white paper, you will discover how ThinPrint optimizes thin client printing in all IT environments. The solution ensures maximum flexibility when choosing both the hardware and design of the printing environment. With ThinPrint, businesses always benefit from reliable printing, regardless of whether employees print from their thin clients to local or network printers. ThinPrint therefore makes a significant contribution to productive workflows via sessions and the smooth operation of virtual desktops and Remote Desktop Session Hosts.
